Amandeep Brar

Amandeep, a first generation Southeast Asian woman of color, has encountered the challenges of navigating her bicultural upbringing while facing the pressures to meet her family's expectations and excel among her peers. Throughout her childhood and adolescence, she embarked on a personal journey to comprehend the significance of mental health and the importance of seeking support when needed. Amandeep has always cherished her ability to provide support and create a safe space for others. Along her path, she gathered various experiences that she believes have prepared her to become a counselor.

Currently interning at Wellness North, Amandeep is pursuing a Master of Counselling at City University in Vancouver. Over the past few years, she has been involved with the Surrey School District in different capacities, ranging from working within schools to presently supporting their Safe Schools Department. In this role, she assists high-risk youth and their families. Prior to this, she gained valuable experience working with the Ministry of Social Development, where she supported the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals in the province.

Amandeep's therapeutic approach is rooted in a multicultural, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive perspective. During her sessions, she incorporates various approaches, such as Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, and Mindfulness theories. Her focus often lies with individuals struggling with anxiety, trauma, and those who are new to therapy. Recognizing that therapy can be intimidating and accompanied by uncertainty, she devotes personalized time to each client, establishing a trusting environment. Regardless of their familiarity with therapy, Amandeep ensures that all her clients are welcomed with kindness, acceptance, and openness. Together, they embark on a collaborative healing journey, fostering self-compassion. As a counselor, her goal is to offer clients a choice in therapy while co-creating a toolbox to help identify and manage their emotions in daily life. Through a non-judgmental and safe space, coupled with empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard, Amandeep works hand-in-hand with her clients to facilitate change and acceptance. She considers it a privilege to accompany clients on their paths of self-reflection and healing.

Driven by a genuine desire to understand and connect with people from all walks of life, Amandeep warmly welcomes youth, adolescents, families, and couples. She recognizes that emotional wounds often revolve around relationships with others, leaving individuals with a profound sense of loneliness. As a therapist, she aims to cultivate a relationship built on trust, courage, and vulnerability with her clients.
