CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy)
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps people learn how to identify and change negative/destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behaviour and emotions. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is derived from CBT but is slightly different. It is an evidence-based model of therapy that helps people learn and use new skills and strategies so that they build lives they feel are worth living. Mindfulness and skill building are essential components and it is exclusively used to treat Borderline Personality Diagnosis and yes, our clinicians are trained to help you with it. Folks who need DBT often have irregular moods, trust issues and can see things as black and white. This approach helps them look at things slightly differently.
Let’s diver further into CBT but we will keep it simple and not bore you with psychological jargon. CBT stands for Cognitive behavioural Therapy and many of our clinicians are highly skilled in providing this treatment that was developed by Aaron beck. CBT is a well known and widely accepted approach as there is a lot of evidence and research behind it. Many referrals that our clinic receives from our trusted medical professionals recommend CBT for our clients and we can discuss with you how this can be helpful for your situation so book your consultation today.
In the CBT approach we work with your mind to untangle negative thoughts. In this treatment modality focus is on changing negative patterns of thinking and behaviors that contribute to emotional and mental health problems and challenges. The therapy is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and that changing one can help improve the others. How wonderful would it be if you can think about different situations, events, experiences in a different light with a new perspective. Allow our therapists to help you with that.
In the CBT model of treatment, your therapist works with you to identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs in the session ( we can give you homework sheets if you’d prefer that but this is not necessary), and help you in identifying and developing healthier coping strategies for managing difficult emotions and situations with much comfort and ease. The therapy typically involves structured sessions where the client and therapist work together to set goals and develop a plan for achieving them. If you are a person who likes structure, plan and prefer your therapist to take the lead then this could be the therapy for you.
CBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, workplace stress, life transitions, PTSD, and eating disorders. It is many times used in combination with other treatments, such as medication, and can be adapted to suit the individual needs of each client.
