Let us see what are some signs of Post Traumatic Stress as per experts:
According to the American Psychiatry Association (2020), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition which may develop by people who have experienced intrusive, traumatic events. To diagnose with PTSD, the symptoms of extensive stress must be longer than one month (National Institutes of Health, 2020) and this is usually done by a Psychiatrist or your Doctor. Here are some specific signs of PTSD listed below according to the National Institute of Health (2020):
Symptoms of re-experiencing intrusive events: Recurrence of the traumatic incident through dreams and memories. Show physical and/or mental distressing thoughts. Possible physical symptoms such as sweating and racing heart upon revisiting the traumatic events in memories.
Symptoms of physical arousal: Inability to fall asleep and/or stay asleep, eat, and concentrate. Some may experience startle, irritation and destructive behaviors.
Symptoms of avoiding traumatic-event related places, sounds, or any signs that correspond to the traumatic event that the person has experienced, to escape the stressful thoughts and feelings it may produce.
Symptoms of mood regulation and behavioral change: Ongoing negative thoughts and ideas about oneself- guilt, fear, shame, etc.. Sudden loss of interest which was previously interesting and enjoyed.
Experiencing some of the signs above and lasting for more than one month is problematic. It will negatively influence one's everyday life. If you believe you have PTSD and are currently experiencing difficulties living in your regular life, it is crucial to meet and talk to professionals to seek personal support. One of the gold standard treatments for post traumatic stress is EMDR or Somatic Work (as trauma does live in the body), connect with our team today if you'd like to book a session to discuss your experiences and struggles.
