Marriage & Couples Counselling

When it comes to marriage counselling or couples therapy only a handful of models are backed by evidence and research. The two most prominent models are the emotional focussed therapy (EFT) model by Sue Johnson and The Gottman method. When choosing a counsellor that can help you create better communication with your partner, assist you in resolving marital conflict or help you identify your own patterns, ensure that they have the appropriate training and certification in Couples Therapy.  Here at Wellness North Counselling we have several trained couples counsellors.

Our clinic director, Aditi Jasra, has deeply studied the attachment model presented by John Bowlby, Les Greenberg and Sue Johnson. She has additional training in couples work through Vancouver Couples and Family institute (VCFI). In Aditi’s own words, our work with couples is focussed on relational bonds “how to enhance, repair and maintain the relationships”.

We begin each session by assessing the attachment security for each couple which then informs the emotion regulating strategies used by couples and eventually leads to positive outcomes from EFT.

Compared to the individual counselling approach, in couples counselling, Aditi and her team take an active role and offer a safe platform whereby each partner can distill, expand, and transform experience and find new ways to connect with each other. In the sessions, they focus on de-escalation, restructuring interactions and consolidation. From surface level emotions, the intent is to bring out primary and softer emotions while identifying attachment needs. Emotional experiences within the session are the primary instruments of change in this approach so it is very much an experiential process that clients can expect from a session.
